Join to apply for the Outbound Study Abroad Advisor role at UC Irvine Overview The Study Abroad Center (SAC) at UC Irvine provides study abroad opportunities that support academic achievement, international learning and personal development. SAC is housed within the Division of Undergraduate Education. The mission is to foster a culture in which study abroad is expected and achievable for all students, helping them develop a global perspective and leadership skills. Your Role on the Team: Under the direction of the Study Abroad Center Director, the Study Abroad Advisor provides experienced student services support to advise and assist students (inbound and/or outbound) through all phases of their international experience. Programs include, but are not limited to, UCs Education Abroad Programs (UCEAP), UCI Partner Exchange Programs, Faculty Led Programs, and other UC and External programs involving work/internship/volunteering/research opportunities abroad. You will independently advise students, support faculty and administration on program development, and work to integrate study abroad into the UC curriculum and student success efforts. This role may involve supervising student staff and administering funds for study abroad programs when available. Responsibilities Advise students on full range of study abroad opportunities and resolve related issues. Support and advise faculty and administration on creation of new programs and global opportunities. Advise on academic integration with UC curriculum and collaborate with academic units to recommend policy and procedural changes. Provide guidance on issues requiring specialized program knowledge via appropriate offices (e.g., financial aid, international center, undergraduate division, student success units). Lead special events and supervise student staff; may administer funds for study abroad programs when available. Engage in outreach and collaboration to expand study abroad opportunities for students. Qualifications What It Takes to be Successful Required: Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques; excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication; ability to resolve conflicts with tact and diplomacy; multicultural competencies; detail oriented with strong critical thinking; sound judgment and independence in problem solving. Experience with records management, database usage, and word processing software; ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines; excellent customer service and student relations skills; ability to foster an inclusive environment. Experience designing and implementing outreach activities and training; Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience; 3-5 years of relevant experience in higher education advising a diverse student population. Preferred: Knowledge of university computer applications and policies related to risk assessment; knowledge of U.S. visa and immigration procedures; experience living/studying/working abroad; foreign language skills; experience designing faculty-led/exchange programs; Master’s degree in a related area and/or 3-5 years of international higher education advising and administration. Special Conditions Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, including after-hours emergencies as necessary. In-person position with flexibility.
