Job Description

Introduction

A career in IBM Software means you'll be part of a team that transforms our customer's challenges into industry-leading solutions. We are an infinitely curious team, always seeking new possibilities, and dedicated to creating the world's leading AI-powered, cloud-native software solutions. Our renowned legacy creates endless global opportunities for our network of IBMers. We are a team of deep product experts, ensuring exceptional client experiences, with a focus on delivery, excellence, and obsession over customer outcomes.

This position involves contributing to HashiCorp's offerings, now part of IBM, which empower organizations to automate and secure multi-cloud and hybrid environments. You will join a team managing the lifecycle of infrastructure and security, enhancing IBM's cloud solutions to ensure enterprises achieve efficiency, security, and scalability in their cloud journey.

Your role and responsibilities

About this Role

The Infrastructure Product Group (Terraform, Waypoint, and Packer) is responsible for building the Infrastructure Cloud which allows enterprises to take a unified approach to Infrastructure Lifecycle Management (build / deploy / manage). Terraform allows you to use infrastructure as code to provision and manage any infrastructure across your organization. The Terraform Registry is a platform that hosts modules and providers for Terraform, enabling users to share and discover reusable infrastructure as code components.

This is a technical engineering management role within the Terraform Expansions group, specifically managing the Terraform Registry engineering team. The engineering team is a globally distributed group of 7 engineers responsible for both public and private offerings of the Terraform Registry.

This is a uniquely collaborative role because the Terraform Registry is critical to the operation of Terraform. As such, applicants are expected to be comfortable managing stakeholder expectations, communicating effectively both internally and externally, and setting the correct expectations for team success. This includes management, coaching, and assisting product management with prioritization and planning.

We view management and technical leadership as two tracks, both requiring a highly technical background. This role is uniquely technical given the deeply infrastructure-related nature of the product. The expected priorities for this role, in order, are: management and coaching, working closely with product and design partners, and providing technical guidance to your team.

In this role, you can expect to

  • Support the career growth for individuals on a team expanding and maintaining the Terraform Registry for a fast-growing user base.

  • Collaborate with product management to drive the development of the Terraform Registry and ensure its uptime and availability.

  • Communicate effectively and partner with several engineering teams across the Terraform organization to achieve org-wide objectives, while assisting the team with effective prioritization of work.

  • Continuously evaluate and improve processes, tools, and workflows to increase efficiency, collaboration, and output.

  • Support the teams on-call rotation ensuring the team is equipped to handle and address incidents promptly and maintain reliability of the product.

  • Lean on the technical background to guide design and architecture conversations between engineers to a clear outcome.

  • Ensure the on-time release of well-tested and reliable software.

  • Leaders are expected to spend time with their teams and clients and therefore are generally expected to be in the workspace a minimum of 3 days a week, subject to business needs.

Required technical and professional expertise

  • 3+ years of experience directly managing software engineers.

  • Prior experience as a software developer with technologies such as Ruby on Rails or Go.

  • Experience managing a diverse, distributed team and flexibility to support a global team located across the US, Europe, and Australia.

  • Experience with running high availability services and production infrastructure and infrastructure-related technologies.

  • Phenomenal communication skills for working across the organization, capable of building strong relationships with peers and leadership.

Preferred technical and professional experience

  • A Bachelor or higher degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related fields.

  • Direct experience with Terraform and/or other infrastructure related technologies.

  • Experience navigating and managing projects spanning multiple codebases and organizations with separate ownership.

IBM is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, caste, genetics, pregnancy, disability, neurodivergence, age, veteran status, or other characteristics. IBM is also committed to compliance with all fair employment practices regarding citizenship and immigration status.
